the crystal goblet

A poster inspired by the essay The Crystal Goblet, or Printing Should Be Invisible by Beatrice Warde (1900—1969) This poster was the first project that made me feel like I was actually getting better at this graphic design thing. The idea of the poster was the ONLY use the contents of the story for the final product, no shapes, no design elements, just a blank page with type.

When I first read through the essay, I took notes on my favorite quotes and built the poster from there. One quote that stood out to me the most was this “It is sheer magic that I should be able to hold a one-sided conversation by means of black marks on paper with an unknown person half-way across the world.” This quote stuck with me because it put into perspective how strong, impactful, and beautiful that art and graphic design can be. It can bring people together whether you like it or not!

This poster was also the first of my work to be displayed in the hallway of the Fine Arts school at the University of South Dakota, a very proud moment for me as our professor picks the best of the best work to be displayed in the hallway for students to admire on the way to their art classes.
