the argument of the century | adobe after effects | 2022
Growing Pains:
This project was based around learning the basics of Adobe After Effects. Our job was to take an audio clip of our choosing that was thirty seconds or less and use animated typography to tell a story visually. While the video is only thirty seconds, the animation took days to complete. As a fan of The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and Wicked, I decided on this viral audio that gained popularity on TikTok. The audio is between two friends having an argument about Glinda the Good Witch coming down in a bubble While the aesthetics are questionable, I’m incredibly proud of this thirty second clip considering how intricate and intimidating After Effects can be.
My goal with this project was strictly to learn the software. While this is technically a design project, the aesthetics were never focused on pleasing the eye, but rather pleasing the soul.
it’s
tasteful.
The intro consists of heavy type that shows this argument is serious and has the passion that could potentially be friendship ending. Floating around the text are animated bubbles, foreshadowing a portion of the argument. With the strategic use of Helvetica for the beginning of the audio, you can’t go wrong. The direction of the word “Up” is actually moving up as he says it. The weight, size, and typeface of each word was determined by the passion and volume in which it was said, as the big red “HOLD ON!” takes up the entire screen because of how loud the man was yelling it.
Different stylistic details are embedded into the video, like the word “Witch” was in a halloween-esque font while the screen turned green and the word “Princess” was pink and written in a more regal looking typeface. These are the details that tell the story of what he is saying in a visual sense. One of my favorite additions was that the Ha Ha’s were written in Comic Sans for comedic purposes. The word “bubble” was inside of a bubble while also in a bubble-looking typeface and animated to move like it was inside of a bubble. It might not look pretty, but this project had pizzaz and there are many reasons why I’m so proud of it.
